Amaechi Inaugurates Inquiry Into Election Killings

Following the crisis that broke out in Rivers state during the recent elections, the incumbent governor of the state, Rotimi Amaechi, yesterday, April 16, embarked on a decisive action to help restore peace in the state.
Governor Amaechi, who is also the chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), yesterday inaugurated a nine-man commission of inquiry to look into the politically-motivated killings in the state, Leadership reports.
Members of the commission include Professor Chidi Odinkalu, the chairman, Sir Samuel Egbe, the secretary, and Professor Nlerum Okogbule. Others are Professor Owunari A. Georgewill, Dr. Richard Ofuru, Mrs. Asivosuo M. Oriye, Dr. Joy Ejiofor, Mrs. Ayo M. O. Obe, and Rev. Father Michael Akiri as members.Speaking during the inauguration at Government House, Port Harcourt, Amaechi, said the fact-finding exercise would last 30 days, and explained that the mission of the commission was to investigate why the victims were killed, who killed them, under what circumstances and for the commission to make useful recommendations that will help government forestall future occurrences.
The governor said, “When I visited Obirikom in the Ogba-Egbeme-Ndoni local government area, in the household of one late Chief Christopher Adube, nine persons were killed by assassins. Those killed were his three children, his younger brother, two gate men, and two other persons.”
