Witch Doctor, 2 Others Badly Beaten By Mob Over 'Rape' And Death Of 7-Year-Old Girl

3 men in India were brutally assaulted by an angry mob after the body
of a young girl was found hanging from a tree.
The 7-year-old girl had gone to a local shop in the village of Kaliabazar,
West Bengal and when she didn't return, the villagers went to search
for her and found her body.
Rumours quickly spread that she had been raped and for yet
unexplained reasons, suspicion fell on Ratan Das , a local witch doctor
and his two friends.
The accused were then attacked and mercilessly beaten by the villagers.
They also set fire to a house belonging to Das. One of the 3 men died in
hospital while the other 2 are still receiving treatment.
The police have said that it is not yet clear if the girl was actually raped
before she died. According to Sukesh Kumar Jain , East Midnapore
Superintendent of Police :
"There is as yet no evidence that the girl was raped before she was
killed. Police said they are not ruling out a family feud as the motive
behind the killing.
We are awaiting the autopsy report to confirm rape,'said a police
officer. There was also some enmity between the families of the girl and
the prime accused, Ratan Das."
Tensions have been high in India, which has become notorious for violent
rape cases, ever since the bodies of two young sisters were found
hanging from a tree in Uttar Pradesh after they had been gang-raped.
