Ikeja warns students against varsity cults

Ikeja - The Ikeja Government has held a seminar aimed at
discouraging cults among local students.
The event has been held under the theme, ‘Evils of Cultism'.
It targeted Secondary School students in the area.
The Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, Wale Odunlami, who was
represented at the event by the Head of Department for
Education, Dr Kemi Adefawakon declared that the programme was
crucial as the students’ next phase of life was University where
cultism thrived.
Odunlami, who affirmed that cultists were known to be deadly in
tertiary institutions, admonished the students to stay focused on
their studies and keep good company.
Dr Olufemi Michael of the University of Ibadan, an activist and
member of anti-cult body, Operations Campus Storm (OCS),
delivered a paper titled "Cultism is Poisonous."
He blamed secret cults for creating the atmosphere of indiscipline,
lawlessness, recklessness and mindless destruction of life and
property which was experienced today in society.
He also cautioned the students that cultism would lead them to
poor performances and such offences that could see them
expelled from school.
Michael therefore urged them to resist any attempt by persons or
groups trying to co-opt them into cultism adding there is nothing
to gain but much to lose by joining them.
Cults are a major problems at some local universities where they
are blamed for violent acts
